MEDIA RELEASE

An Ultimate Rugby Training Experience is up for Grabs
Specsavers is giving local rugby teams a chance to learn from the very best

Would your rugby team benefit from a skills session with an Investec Super Rugby Referee that knows the game inside out? Specsavers is looking to reward one deserving rugby team with a money-can’t-buy training experience with one of New Zealand’s top referees.

Currently in its third year, the Specsavers Ultimate Rugby Training Experience is open to all rugby clubs and schools nationwide. The prize allows one team complete access to the extensive knowledge and experience only a Super Rugby Referee can provide, as well as $1,000 for the team, a comprehensive eye exam for all players and glasses for those who require them.

“We’re really excited to be a part of this initiative for a third year running,” says New Zealand Rugby High Performance Referee Manager, Bryce Lawrence.

“The Ultimate Rugby Training Experience is a great way to share the expertise of New Zealand’s top referees with rugby fans and it’s not just about the players, we also get to pass on the knowledge to local coaches and referees which allows us to reach the wider community as well,” adds Lawrence.

Forming part of the referees’ rigorous training programme and as part of Specsavers’ sponsorship of Investec Super Rugby, the referees have their eyes tested every two years to ensure they never miss a thing on the field.

“Our referees are highly trained, and we rely on them to make the right calls which is why their eyesight needs to be precise and sharp,” says Lawrence.

Specsavers’ mission is to look after the eye health of all New Zealander’s, which is why the winners of the Ultimate Rugby Training Experience are also entitled to receive a comprehensive eye examination and prescription glasses if needed.

Brendan Thompson, Specsavers New Zealand Country Director says, “As the Official Eyecare Provider of the Investec Super Rugby Match Officials, we’re committed to making eye health a priority and want to extend this to local rugby teams as well.

“We’re proud to be giving yet another deserving local rugby team the chance to develop their skills and knowledge in a sport they love, while ensuring they have optimal eye health in order to stay in peak condition.

“Rugby players will surely benefit from this skills session with an Investec Super Rugby Referee. It’s such a unique opportunity, so we hope all local Kiwi teams enter to take advantage of this professional training,” Thompson adds.

Last year, the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Premiere 2 team took away the prize, just in time for their trip to England to compete in the Commonwealth Navies Rugby Cup in England.

Barry Waerea, Team Coach said, “The skills learned and the experience the boys had last year was invaluable, not to mention they had an absolute blast being trained by rugby icon, Glen Jackson! The prize came at just the right time too.

“A lot of hard work goes into training each season and I would encourage all local teams, coaches or managers to enter the Ultimate Rugby Training Experience and reward their players.”

The winning team will receive:
• An exclusive training session with an Investec Super Rugby referee
• $1,000 cash prize for the team
• A comprehensive eye examination at Specsavers with a free pair of prescription glasses for each team member who requires them

For the chance to win the Ultimate Rugby Training Experience thanks to Specsavers, email Rugby@Specsavers.com explaining why your rugby team could benefit from this skill session in 100 words or less.
