There will be monsters, romance, time travel, blood, heartbreak, splatter and a lot of laughs.
Go ape with us at the beautiful Civic Theatre in the heart of Auckland where we will be screening and celebrating the best 18 films from the 2018 HP48Hours.
Who will be crowned 2018 Grand Chimp?
In May, 558 teams registered from 7 regions across Aotearoa, which have been whittled down to 18 epic finalist films, 15 Grand Finalists and 3 Peter Jackson Wildcards.
Judged by 18 national and international judges, there will be 17 awards and $100k prizes of cash and services to be presented on the night including the coveted Grand National Champ for 2018.
“Everyone’s work was different, different styles, different ideas , different approaches which I think is very exciting for the future of cinematography in Aotearoa and I’m sure we’ll be seeing most of them all in the future as NZ’s cinematographers.” David Paul (NZ Cinematography Judge)
“What a delight this was to be a part of, such magical movies, and a good reminder that people making anything in more than 48 hours have no excuse to make anything less interesting and passionate and thoughtful and fun than what your filmmakers did.” Alexandra Heller-Nicholas (International Judge)
“I’m always amazed by what the teams come up with and this year’s films are insanely good! You have a hard time believing that they have been made in 48-hours. Many of these films could easily have a life beyond the competition, like 2017 winner Cool Story Bro, which is featuring in the NZIFF this year.” Vanessa Patea, HP48Hours National Operations
This year, for the second time, veteran teams (5 years+) were able to opt in for an extra challenge called Ultra, because creating a whole short film in 48 Hours is too easy, right?!
All Ultra teams had the extra surprise requirement that their film had to feature children or animals as the main character(s).
Ant Timpson will be giving a new award to the Best Solo/Duo Film from the courageous teams that enter with only one or two people in their team.
“Each year the solo/duo teams push themselves to the utter limits, using every skill set they have and losing precious brain cells from the lack of sleep. I will be putting up $1000 for the winning film from this sub-group of extreme filmmakers!” - Ant Timpson - HP48Hours Founder
Gaylene Preston and WIFT will be acknowledging the Best Female Director with a $1000.00 cash prize. This annual prize is an incentive to attract more female directors into the competition.
