Seddon Park to host international double-header

Seddon Park to host international double-header during 2018-2019 season
31 July 2018

Cricket fans will get five chances to see New Zealand’s BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS in action at Seddon Park during the 2018-2019 international season.

New Zealand Cricket has announced its match allocations for the coming home season, with Seddon Park hosting One Day International (ODI), Test and T20 cricket – including a double-header on Sunday 10 February which will see the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS take on India’s men’s and women’s teams in consecutive matches over the course of the afternoon and evening.

Sean Murray, Hamilton City Council’s General Manager of Venues, Tourism and Major Events, says the Indian teams enjoy energetic and devoted support from their fans, who fill Seddon Park to capacity whenever their heroes feature in the city.

“India have played in Hamilton several times in recent years, including the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, and their supporters contribute to a terrific atmosphere at Seddon Park,” Mr Murray says.

“To be hosting the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS and their Indian counterparts on the same day is really exciting for us and we’re confident of sell-out crowds for that double-header.

“The BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS are among the world’s top teams, and similarly the two Indian sides are highly ranked and very tough to beat.”

Test cricket also makes its annual return to Hamilton this coming summer, with the BLACKCAPS to play Bangladesh at Seddon Park in a match starting on Thursday 28 February. One early-season four-day tour match between New Zealand A and India A has been scheduled for Friday 23 November to Monday 26 November.

New Zealand Cricket CEO David White says: “A Test against Bangladesh and an ODI and T20 against India only reinforces Seddon Park’s value over all three formats of the game. New Zealand Cricket is delighted the venue will also host double-headers between the BLACKCAPS and India men, and the WHITE FERNS and India women.”

Seddon Park has a crowd capacity of 10,000 and hosted its first ODI in 1981. The first Test at the ground was held in 1991, and it is seen as one of the best “boutique” international cricket venues in the world, with its grassed banks, tree-lined perimeter, picnic atmosphere and close proximity to Hamilton’s central business district and hospitality precinct.

Seddon Park is managed by H3, the Council’s event facilities arm.
