Powerful New Dance Story!
Over 50 Performers Combine Maori, Pacific And Chinese Culture to Create Powerful New Dance Story!
Vodafone Events Centre and TOHU Productions presents
ONE: The Earth Rises
Award winning choreographer Moss Patterson (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) wrangles the talent of over fifty aspiring performers combining Maori, Polynesian and Chinese narratives and the rhythms of traditional kapa haka and tai chi to create the powerful new contemporary dance installation ONE: The Earth Rises playing as part of Tempo Dance Festival at the BNZ Theatre, Vodafone Events Centre, Manukau on 3 October 2018.
A series of interconnected dance images depicting the beauty and whakapapa of the Manukau region. Ancestors, spiritual beings, market gardens, 1000-year-old laments celebrating the diversity of Manukau while rising above prejudice and racism towards minority cultures within Aotearoa.
Featuring performers from TOHU Dance Theatre with Ngā Tapuwae College, UNITEC Performing Arts School, James Cook High School, The Auckland Chinese Philharmonic Choir and the Auckland arts community ONE: The Earth Rises narrates a whakapapa of the manukau region with untold stories inspired by local Maori traditions and the development of Chinese market gardens in the manukau area.
Patterson fuses traditional and contemporary dance imagery with striking live visual projections from Sand Artist Marcus Winter aka the sand man with electronic and choral soundscapes, with pre-recorded media sound bites, created by Paddy Free from Pitch Black fame. These two incredible collaborators have taken the project to another level gracing it with incredible sound, mighty projection and banging visuals in celebration of our diversity and our very own stories.
A leading light in NZ dance for over twenty years, Patterson has danced with some of our most famous dance company’s including Atamira, Black Grace, Footnote Dance Company and Touch Compass. He has been recognised for his work by winning awards and being named Best New Choreographer by the NZ Listener. He has also been recognised by Creative NZ for his work – taking home the Tup Lang Dance scholarship with Atamira Dance Company and the Te Whakahaungia choreographic award by Toi Māori Aotearoa.
Patterson is exceptional at working with young artists to create relevant, exciting and vigorous performances. Most recently his work’s AWA and RUAUMOKO with young artists were presented at Auckland International Arts Festival. He is a passionate advocate for Māori culture and Māori contemporary dance in New Zealand and is passionate about presenting diverse and contemporary stories to new audiences.
