Hybrid Rose - Warhol

Hybrid Rose - Warhol

In a world where pop music is meshed with indie music, where Trump is president and music has become more readily available online than ever, Hybrid Rose embraces the great online with her most colourful album to date Warhol. Rose has taken the time to sit down and talk about this album and what it means to her.

Warhol is a self expressive album. I had this cool idea of putting myself on a canvas and creating this universe around me that depicts what Hybrid Rose is in current form. I was also very inspired by people who changed pop culture with art - Andy Warhol to be specific. I feel like he was such a very out of this world character, and he's just so strange and experimental and I wanted to channel my inner Andy Warhol energy with this album, through experimenting with electro-pop music.”

Her current frustration is particularly with the direction pop music is going - the reason why she wanted to experiment with electronic pop music in the first place.

“I have met a lot of artists, musicians specifically and I have noticed that there has become a trend to only make one kind of music and create this ‘comfort zone’ of what they will and will not create. As someone who is really passionate about creative expression and that kind of integrity, I am offended that these people are shifting pop music back to something that we’ve heard before without making waves. I want to do the opposite. I want to make music that shifts from what everyone else is listening to at the moment and make some new waves happen. If people have been able to shift the sound of popular music forward, why would we want to press rewind and play it safe? Fuck that!”

Warhol’ is the follow up to her debut album release ‘Cosmic’, released just over a year ago in April last year. While ‘Cosmic’ had a very upbeat feeling to it, using a lot of video game-influenced noises and sounds, Warhol shifts from that sound and feels like a little more inspired by bubblegum pop, with that retro.

“I don’t like modern music, my brand is electronic music but I don’t like being compared to modern electronic music producers. It feels a little too fake and it all sounds the same now! People loved the nostalgic feel that I used on Cosmic, and I’ve always had a fascination with modern producers who put a vintage spin on their music. It feels classical and beautiful and creates a nostalgic vibe for those who grew up with that music. I also find that people LOVE to hear throwback music played at events, it gets the crowd going so let’s put vintage music back on the radio again!”

Alongside the new release, Rose will finally bring her music to a live setting for the first time,

“After crafting a sound that I am confident with, I am ready to get out there and start performing my music live for everyone to experience. I want to come out in a very colourful outfit and throw on some fairy lights and play a set with a variety of tracks. Some songs were made so they could be played lived, especially on ‘Warhol’. I have even put together some non-album tracks that would be played as live exclusives for people to experience! Live music is a different feeling to listening to the studio version and that’s why it’s important to keep things interesting!”
