Writing “Alone” in a Group Delivers Surprising Results
The clichéd perception of writers is that they’re a solitary bunch, destined toil away alone.
And as writer and writing coach Kathryn Burnett confirms, it is unusual to find big groups of writers writing together – at least it used to be. Burnett has been running The Writing Room for a year and launched her first ever one-day BIG Write-In last July. The one-day group writing session proved so popular – quickly selling out - she’s decided to start running the writing event on a regular basis.
The BIG Mid-Spring Write-In is happening Sunday 4th November in Auckland.
As Burnett says, she was initially surprised to discover that there are numerous benefits to writing “alone” in a large group.
“There’s the obvious companionship but the real surprise is just how motivating it is. You’d think it would be distracting to sit in a room with other working writers – but it isn’t, it’s actually inspiring, energising - and makes you want to work.”
How exactly does a write-in work?
Participants arrive with their project, their tools of choice and they write. But participants can also expect creativity expanding exercises, socialising and coffee breaks.
Burnett first created the BIG Write-In event because she knows that carving out focused writing time is one of the biggest obstacles to writers achieving their goals.
Burnett is an award-winning screenwriter, playwright and writing coach who delights in creatively inspiring others. She has worked in the arts industry for 25 years and has most recently been working on new TVNZ black comedy “Fresh Eggs.” She was a recent 2018 recipient of the NZWG Seed Advanced Grant and currently has two feature film projects in development - one with “Shrek” director Andrew Adamson.
