Lifeguards get top training

Twenty lifeguards from nine clubs across the Northern region have participated in the latest rescue techniques at the first of three Intermediate Guard Schools at the Mangawhai Heads club last weekend.

“The teamwork and attitude towards learning shown by all attendees was of an incredibly high standard,” says Paul Hardy, the training supervisor.

Two Surf Life Saving New South Wales trainers came for the weekend providing further expertise in the water, and around incident management and board rescues.

The School candidates learned about topics such as the role of an Intermediate Lifeguard on patrol, completion of a Board Rescue Module, setting up helicopter landing zones, introduction to Search and Rescue, organisational professionalism and image, and completion of the SLSNZ Rock Navigation Module.

The east coast location made learning a lot easier for attendees from west coast beaches who have to cope with heavier surf conditions.

The St. John Ambulance also highlighted how the two agencies work together during a critical incident.
