(Auckland - November 22, 2018) The New Zealand television industry gathered at a star-studded event in Auckland tonight as the year’s best and brightest were celebrated at the 2018 Huawei Mate20 New Zealand Television Awards.
The major free-to-air broadcasters enjoyed significant wins across the board with TVNZ’s 1 News taking out the award for Best News Coverage and TVNZ Sunday’s Jehan Casinader winning Reporter of the Year, while Newshub’s Mike McRoberts was named Best Presenter: News & Current Affairs for the second year in a row and Three’s long-serving larrikins Jono & Ben got to go out on a high with the final series of their eponymous show winning the award for Best Comedy/Comedy Entertainment Programme.
Three’s flagship drama Westside, produced by South Pacific Pictures, won the NZ On Air Best Drama Series award and series lead Antonia Prebble was named Huawei Mate20 Best Actress. South Pacific Pictures earned a clean sweep in the performance categories with 800 Words’ Rick Donald winning Best Actor.
The TVNZ 1 telefeature The Dance Exponents: Why Does Love? added to its impressive haul from the Craft Awards earlier this month, winning the Images & Sound Best Feature Drama category at tonight’s Gala Ceremony. Produced by Great Southern Television, the production earned a total of five category wins across the two award ceremonies - the most of any single production this year.
Topp Country also added to its earlier Craft Awards win with two additional awards tonight: Best Director: Documentary Factual and Best Lifestyle Programme.
Veteran broadcaster Tini Molyneux was honoured this evening with the 2018 Legend Award presented to her by her former newsroom colleague Judy Bailey. And TVNZ Breakfast’s Hayley Holt was voted in as the 2018 Woman’s Day Personality of the Year.
Content produced for online platforms was also celebrated tonight with the Great Southern Television’s RNZ documentary NZ Wars: The Stories of Ruapekapeka being named both Te Māngai Pāho Best Maori Programme and NZ On Air Best Documentary. Stuff Circuit was awarded Best Current Affairs Programme and TVNZ on Demand’s Baby Mama’s Club was named NZ On Air Best Web Series.

Māori Television also won the Best Live Event Coverage category for the ANZAC Dawn Service 2018. Sky Network Television’s No Regrets was named the Monstavision Best Sports Programme, adding to the network’s earlier Craft Awards win for Best Director: Multi Camera for the HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series, Hamilton.
