Casting Director Brings Broadway Stars to Auckland

Broadway Casting Director Brings Broadway Stars to Auckland Summer Training Programme

New Zealand born Broadway casting director provides unique opportunity for Kiwi performers.

Annette Tanner is returning home to New Zealand in January 2019 and is bringing a host of Broadway stars and creatives with her once again. Tanner has been a Broadway casting director for the past 21 years; she is also the Founder and President of Broadway Dreams, a not-for-profit performing arts education organisation, providing youth and young adults of all socio-economic backgrounds with performance training, life skills and mentorship opportunities.

Tanner has teamed up with the Broadway Dreams Foundation New Zealand to bring their highly successful Summer Intensive programme to Auckland for a second year. This trademark initiative is an 9-day programme of rigorous professional musical theatre training, with a focus on acting, vocal performance and dance.

In addition to Tanner, the Broadway team heading to Auckland include Quentin Earl Darrington, who is currently performing in Once on this Island on Broadway, Victor Jackson, creative director and choreographer for stars such as Iggy Azalea and Jennifer Hudson, Matt Scott, Jersey Boys, An American in Paris on Broadway and US National Tour, and Kirsten Scott, Hairspray, Big Fish, Follies (starring Bernadette Peters) on Broadway.

This is a unique opportunity for New Zealand performers to work and perform alongside Broadway career-makers, who will select at least three students from the Auckland programme to perform at the Broadway Dreams international showcase, attended by top Broadway directors, casting agents, theatre companies, universities and composers scouting for new talent, in New York in November 2019.

Four NZ dreamers were selected from the inaugural 2018 Auckland Summer Intensive. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for Kristin Candice Paulse, Geena Hutton, Paris Jagger and Jaxson Cook, who fulfilled their ‘Broadway Dreams’ when they performed at the international Broadway Dreams showcase in New York on 19 November.

The programme started in Atlanta in 2006 and has grown to 10 cities in the US, two in Canada, Russia, Brazil, Germany, and now New Zealand. The programme is all about Broadway “giving back” and helping the next generation of performers take their next career steps.

The Broadway Dreams NZ 2019 Summer Intensive runs January 12 – 20 January 2019 at The Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna. Registrations are still open at www.bdfnz.com/online. Tickets for the Broadway Dreams 2019 Summer Intensive Showcase ‘A New York State of Mind’, at the Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna, on Sunday 20 January at 7pm go on sale to the general public on Sunday 23 December at 12noon via Ticketmaster.co.nz.
