New Zealand Umpires Earn Netball World Cup Call-up

11 February, 2019

Four New Zealand umpires have been named to control games at this year’s Netball World Cup in England.

Angela Armstrong-Lush, Lisa McPhail, Gareth Fowler and Josh Bowring – who recently moved to New Zealand – are part of a 17-strong Umpire Squad confirmed by the International Netball Federation (INF) for July’s Netball World Cup.

New Zealand umpiring coach Fay Meiklejohn will join the quartet at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool to Chair the Umpiring Appointment Panel.

Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie was thrilled to see New Zealand represented amongst the officials for the key Netball tournament.

“Our players are striving to be the best on the international stage, and it is something that our leading umpires also work towards,” she said.

“Their selection to umpire at the Netball World Cup in England is recognition of the hard work, dedication and achievements in their umpiring careers.”

Bowring, who has controlled games at previous Netball World Cups and Commonwealth Games, has recently moved to Wellington from Australia and has been included in New Zealand’s National Umpire Squad.

Both he and McPhail were umpires at the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney while Meiklejohn was an umpire at the 2011 Netball World Cup in Singapore before hanging up her whistle in 2016 and continuing in an umpire coaching role.

INF International Umpiring Manager, Christina Davidson, was delighted to confirm the umpires who would be involved in Netball’s pinnacle event.
