Auckland Comic Artist Memoh. To Release Debut Fantasy Manga Dominion

“Who are you willing to damn for power?” Centred on this haunting question, the YA fantasy-romance comic Dominion follows Desmond Oakenhart, a handsome city guardsman who struggles under his wealthy family’s expectations. But before Desmond can be convinced to give up his dreams, he lucks his way onto a major investigation thanks to a dramatic encounter with a fiery vigilante. Now under orders to work together to solve an ominous string of murders, Desmond and the arsonist Pasha follow the trail – a trail that might well lead to hell itself.

Genre-subversive (featuring a younger man/older woman slow-burn romance), vividly imaginative, and beautifully crafted, Dominion, Vol. 1 features the first nine chapters from the lauded webcomic series in full colour, and includes exclusive print-edition bonus content such as character profiles, a location map, and a library of illustrations.

When speaking on the upcoming release, memoh. had this to say: “This comic is going to hit on heavy themes; hatred, revenge, and what evils people will justify to feel like they are in control of their lives. Additionally, I’ve approached the romance within it from a unique angle. Desmond is something called a “camera character,” as in, through his eyes we observe the true centre of the plot (Pasha). I wanted to do this framing because too often in romances this camera-character role is given to women; chronicling their paramour's grand deeds to the reader versus their own actions holding the largest narrative weight. I want to twist that paradigm - and I want to see the man swoon!”

Perfect for those who long to adventure in epic fantastical worlds with insidious underbellies, Dominion, Vol. 1 will have readers thirsting for the next instalment. It will also be a hit with fans of Shadow and Bone, The Cruel Prince, and TV’s Castlevania. Recommended for mature or older teens.

Dominion is a stunning addition to the growing New Zealand comics scene, and will be published as a paperback manga thanks to funding from Creative NZ. This volume is also printed in partnership with historic Kiwi comics printer Beyond the Ledge Press, printers of Funtime Comics, New Zealand’s longest-running comics anthology, based in Christchurch.

Preorders for the paperback edition of Dominion, Vol. 1 open 3 May, and the comic can be purchased online or instore from any comic book shop in New Zealand from 21 May, 2025. The international release of the paperback and e-book editions is slotted for 11 June, 2025. A book launch event will be hosted at Auckland comic shop Heroes for Sale on 24 May, 2025. A detailed list of stockists is available on our website.

Praise for Dominion

“I adore the artwork on this webcomic, the detail and the love for it is there. The detail in simply everything is easy to get lost in, and the atmosphere and lighting is always perfect to match... I’m already hooked on this one, and I cannot wait to see more!” - Artcrumbs, GlobalComix Editor and Manga-ka of Onami (published by VIZ Media)
