Ice Fernz Edge Ukraine In Thrilling Overtime Victory To Open World Champs In Dunedin

In front of a roaring hometown crowd at Dunedin Ice Stadium, the New Zealand Ice Fernz launched their 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship Division II Group B campaign in spectacular fashion, with a win against Ukraine 4-3 in overtime.

The atmosphere inside the packed venue was electric as fans watched the Ice Fernz claw back from a 3-2 deficit in the third period to level the score and send the game into overtime. With hearts pounding and every play amplified by the intensity in the stands, it was Katya Blong who sealed the deal for the Kiwis, rifling home the game-winner and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Ukraine came into the match with grit and purpose, led by their standout forward Valeriia Manchak (C), who was awarded Player of the Game for her dominant presence and offensive threat throughout the match. New Zealand’s Anjali Mulari, a seasoned veteran , matched Manchak’s brilliance and was instrumental in keeping New Zealand in contention, earning herself the Player of the Game nod for the home side.

Assistant Coach Andrew “A.J.” Spiller praised the team’s resilience after the dramatic win.

“That was a gutsy performance. We knew Ukraine would bring everything, and our girls just kept battling. We talk a lot about playing for each other, and tonight they showed exactly what that means,” Spiller said.

The Ice Fernz now turn their focus to Belgium, who will be riding high after an emphatic 6-2 victory over Hong Kong in their opening game. The Belgians showcased speed and finishing flair in that match, setting the stage for a high-octane clash tonight in Dunedin.
