Craccum Burning Draws Condemnation

A group of about 10 students, including an AUSA executive member and the Editor of Hamilton student magazine Nexus, burnt approximately 100 copies of Craccum in the Student Union complex on Thursday night.

The burning, which occurred at about 10:45 p.m., was captured on film by Craccum staff and volunteers who were in the Craccum offices, just above where the burning took place, putting the latest issue to print.

“The actions of these students is totally irresponsible and morally repugnant,” said Auckland University Students’ Association Adminstrative Vice-President Mark Van Zon in reaction to the burning. “It was a cowardly act of arson which could have spread to the rest of the student union building.”

Mark Van Zon said that he hoped that the perpetrators would be disciplined. “Actions like this have no place in a University which is supposedly a bastion of free speech,” said Mr Van Zon.
