Tourism Scholarships Announced
The Tourism Industry Association (TIA) Chief Executive Glenys Coughlan today announced the winner of the Careers In Tourism competition.
The winning school is Whangarei Girls' High School with an entry from Kylie Schofield. Kylie's won with a magazine for 18-25 year olds on "Kiwi Culture - What's Cool" Whangarei Girls' High School wins: One partial fee scholarship to study for a degree programme in tourism at Lincoln University, A Sir George Seymour National College of Tourism & Travel scholarship valued at $8,500. This college has campuses in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.
The three runners-up schools in the competition were: James Hargest High School, Invercargill with an entry from Chris Walsh. Christchurch Boys' High School with an entry from Matthew Cleaver. Carmel College, Auckland with an entry from Rosemary Williams.
The three finalist schools are winners of a Sir George Seymour National College of Tourism & Travel scholarship valued at $8,500.
"We were very impressed by the high quality of the entries received from schools from around New Zealand. It is great to see the importance of tourism recognised in high schools from one end of New Zealand to the other.
"Kylie Schofield won because her entry was unique, with a great sense of style and originality, and a good grasp of what the New Zealand tourism industry can offer and what it is that motivates travellers," Ms Coughlan said.
"The competition was designed by TIA to highlight the wide range of career opportunities in tourism. Our industry offers part-time and full time career opportunities in everything from aviation and e-commerce, conservation, management, hospitality and marketing. As the employer of one in every 12 New Zealanders, the tourism industry has a lot to offer today's high school leavers," Ms Coughlan said.
Representatives from Whangarei Girls' High School will be in Wellington on Friday 11 August to collect their award at the New Zealand Tourism Conference 2000.
