Schools Called To Enter Annual Awards’ Programme
December 7, 2000
New Zealand schools have been invited to enter the fourth Goodman Fielder School of the Year Awards designed to pay tribute to excellence in education.
Patearoa School principal Anne Wright, co-winner of the 1999 Goodman Fielder School of the Year title with Piopio College, urges all schools to embrace the 2000 Goodman Fielder School of the Year Awards following their success.
“To have our achievements recognised through a Goodman Fielder School of the Year award has been a real boost for all involved in the school. We commend Goodman Fielder for organising such a programme acknowledging excellence in New Zealand education and encourage other schools to embrace this opportunity,” she says.
Goodman Fielder Milling and Baking managing director Colin Wise says the awards offer schools the unique opportunity to have achievements officially acknowledged and celebrated.
“Goodman Fielder is once more delighted to invite schools to enter the awards, a programme which has proved extremely rewarding for all involved, particularly at a time when many are feeling financial pressure,” says Mr Wise.
“The Goodman Fielder School of the Year Awards’ success is, as usual, dependent on support from schools and I encourage principals to embrace the chance for their school to shine and have hard work rewarded.”
Schools have until 5pm Friday, May 4 2001 to submit their entries under one of the five competition categories based on the size and type of school. Entries will be judged on criteria developed to measure achievements alongside other schools in similar circumstances.
The $100,000 prize pool for the 2000 Goodman Fielder School of the Year Awards will see five schools each receiving a cash prize of $10,000 and a trophy, with a further $40,000 and supreme trophy awarded to the overall winner. The 10 runners up will also receive $1000 cash and a certificate.
Merit certificates will be awarded to 20 schools that show outstanding achievement in a particular aspect of their entry.
The Goodman Fielder School of the Year website was set up last year to help schools when preparing their entry. This has been advanced to enable schools to download the entry form and submit their entry via the site. Visiting www.goodmanfielder.com.au through the Community Relations’ link accesses the site.
The high calibre judging panel will again be chaired by the Rt Hon David Lange with panel members including Dame Catherine Tizard, Gary McCormick, April Ieremia and Colin Wise. Educationalists Pat Riley, Noel Scott, John Boyens and Gae Griffiths will serve on a pre-selection panel with Pat and Noel representing the panel on judging day.
Fifteen finalists will be advised in late May 2001 and winners announced at a special ceremony in Wellington on Thursday, June 21 2001. A student and staff representative from each of the 15 schools will be flown to this awards’ presentation.
