Dunedin gold for sport, gold for charm

Dunedin gold for sport, gold for charm

Press Release University Sport New Zealand

Otago proved to be the number one sporting campus in New Zealand over the Easter weekend as it won the Usit New Zealand Universities Games.

"It was Dunedin gold for sport, gold for charm", said Darel Hall President of University Sport New Zealand."

"Many students commented to me and other officials about how friendly people were in Dunedin, how relaxed the hospitality trade was with dress standards, and the great 'feel' that Dunedin has."

"On top of that the weather was absolutely brilliant. I suspect that the approximately 2,500 out-of-town competitors, coaches and officials have a new appreciation of Dunedin. There is some genuine merit in the Otago University advertisement that challenges that perception."

"I am also pleased that we have honoured our responsibility to the local community and to students to ensure responsible host practices were built into our events."

"As we completed the competition we found out from the International University Sports Federation (FISU) that the New Zealand Universities women's volleyball team has been selected to compete at the World University Games in Beijing, China during August this year. In addition the New Zealand Universities women's soccer team has been placed on the reserve list."

"This is fantastic news for University and New Zealand sport," Mr Hall concluded.
