Maharey Caught In Tertiary Crosshairs
“Associate Minister for Education (Tertiary) Steve Maharey found himself embroiled in controversy today when confronted with tertiary representatives angry at the continued underfunding of the tertiary sector to benefit Private Training Enterprises (PTE’s).” said Keith Clark President of the Aotearoa Tertiary Students Association.
“ATSA has already made strong representations to Maharey supporting reinstatement of a 12% capital-funding differential between Tertiary Education Institutions (TEI’s) and PTE’s, as long as its introduction was graduated” said Clark.
“However, ATSA holds legitimate concerns for PTE students who may be caught up in the games of tertiary sector lobbyists seeking to enhance extra funding for their institutions, no matter how right or wrong they may be.
“ATSA wants ALL students looked after irrespective of an individuals choice in tertiary provider. We care that a number of the PTE students could potentially be hit with huge fee rises over a single year. ATSA believes that a gradual reinstatement of a funding differential from 2003 to 2006 would work reasonably well for all” advised Clark.
