Negotiations To Resume

The PPTA and the Ministry of Education will resume negotiations next week following the rejection of a proposed settlement by PPTA members.

President Jen McCutcheon said while no specific date had been confirmed both sides were eager to get back to the negotiating table.

“Both groups are committed to getting together again next week to recommence negotiations. This is good news and we hope we can move forward on the issues of concern to our members,” Mrs McCutcheon said.

“Our executive is meeting later this week and will put together a plan of action to take to members during a national one-day strike on March 1. We are aware this strike will cause disruption to students and their parents but secondary teachers want a collective agreement that suits their needs and rewards them for the work they do. That currently is not the case, hence the rejection of the settlement.”

“Secondary teachers seem to be the forgotten profession and our members are saying enough is enough. It is now time for recognition, especially in light of changes this year to the qualifications system with the introduction of the National Certificate in Educational Achievement,” Mrs McCutcheon said.
