Correspondence School Prizewinners Announced

The Correspondence School has awarded 65 prizes for academic excellence and outstanding achievement to primary, secondary and adult students, living throughout New Zealand and overseas.

“We are very proud of all our prizewinners,” said Mark Beach, Director of Teaching, The Correspondence School. “It was an incredibly hard task selecting the candidates. We have over 20,000 highly-motivated, unique students, who are supported by dedicated parents, supervisors and whanau."

Mark Beach awarded the Director’s Prize for Meritorious Work to Aimee Avery, who is in Year 12 and lives in Fielding.

“Aimee’s commitment to education is highlighted by both her work and her attitude,” says Mark Beach. “Aimee is enrolled as an adult student. She has completed a huge volume of work this year and is averaging over 90 per cent in all her courses. She is very focused on her goal of studying agricultural sciences at Massey University.”

The school Dux, who has won a total of six prizes, is Supriti Bajracharya, Year 13, Sydney, Australia. Supriti’s prizes include excellence in: History, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Calculus, Chemistry and Biology.

“Winning six prizes is an outstanding achievement,” says Mark Beach, “especially when you consider that English is a second language for Supriti, who was born in Nepal, with Nepalese as her first language.” The family are living temporarily in Sydney, Australia, and hope to return to Auckland, New Zealand, in the future.

Jenna Lumb, Year 12 from Prebbleton, Canterbury, and Ataria Gibbons, Year 3, from Keri Keri, both won a new prize this year. The Co-operative Learning prize was created to recognise students successfully adapting to e-learning, and assisting other students through ICT technologies, such as online learning and video conferencing.

Another new prize, donated by a former staff member who worked with young parents at the school, is the “Fuchsia Trust Mansfield” prize for a teen parent who has made the most of their education. This prize has been won by Christie Shepherd, Year 12, Wellington.

“Some students won prizes for their absolute dedication and commitment to their education. Lucy Snowden, Year 9, Hamilton is one of these. She has worked extremely hard this year and is awarded one of the Elizabeth Boraman-Barrell Memorial prizes for students who have responded to challenges,” says Mark Beach.

Ty King-Wall, age 15 from Kati Kati, Bay of Plenty, is a talented young dancer. Ty has done all his schooling via correspondence and he has won a prize for excellence in Geography. Ty has just been accepted into the prestigious Australian Ballet School.

Although Correspondence School students range from age three to 93, this year’s youngest and oldest prizewinners are Ataria Gibbons, age 8, from Henderson, Auckland and Joanna Thomas, age 60, from Nelson.

Two students received two prizes: Narelle Oliver, Year 11 from Makoura College, Masterton and Holly Edgecomb, Year 15, Waihi.

Another first this year is dual-enrolled students being eligible for the school prizes. Over 10,000 students study at their local schools, but do one or two subjects with The Correspondence School.
