Transfund funds new bus service for the Southern Institute of Technology A new bus service to provide improved travel options to and from Invercargill's Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is likely with approval of funding by Transfund New Zealand.
Transfund has agreed to fund bus services which will provide two new routes to the SIT between 8:00-8:45am and from the SIT between 4:45-5:30pm.
Transfund's Southern Regional Manager, Neil Bennett said the new services would meet a real need for students using public transport in Invercargill as an increase in students meant accommodation close to the SIT was in short supply.
"The SIT has experienced significant growth in student numbers, with over 3,000 students now enrolled. It has been estimated about 60-70 percent of these students would use such a service," he said.
Funding of this service was in response to an application from Invercargill City Council. This new service is funded as part of Transfund's initiative to provide kick-start funding for new passenger services to grow demand.
