Scholarships Offered To Senior School Students

Auckland International College Offers Scholarships To Senior School Students

Wanted: Motivated Year 11 (5th form) students in your region to apply for scholarships worth $43,000 each over three years!

Auckland International College (AIC), based in Airedale Street, is offering senior school students from New Zealand and overseas the opportunity to earn one of 24 full tuition fee scholarships and 24 half tuition fee scholarships.

The scholarships are aimed at students interested in applying for AIC’s Year 11 Pre-IB Diploma Programme beginning in July 2003, leading to the two year prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma planned for delivery in July 2004.

The IB is a two-year pre-university programme that aims to provide a balanced, rigorous curriculum for highly motivated secondary school students in Years 12 and 13 (aged 16 to 19) while fostering international understanding and responsible citizenship.

The IB Diploma programme is taught in 1421 schools in 115 countries. AIC is one of only a few New Zealand Schools, and the second school in the Auckland region, to offer the IB.

Doug Haynes, Executive Principal of AIC, says the scholarships commemorate the launch of AIC’s new Senior School.

“AIC’s senior school offers an exciting alternative for Year 11-13 students seeking challenging and rewarding programmes in a truly international environment. As the college operates a Northern Hemisphere academic year from July to June, students will have the choice of enrolling in universities in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom or Europe as well as New Zealand or Australian universities.”

Internationally recognised as a university entrance qualification, the IB Diploma offered through the senior school will enhance an AIC student’s opportunity to gain entry to some of the world's most prestigious universities, such as Yale, Harvard and Oxford, as well as those in New Zealand.

“Our Pre-IB programme, starting July 2003, followed by the IB Diploma planned for implementation in July 2004, is attracting interest from parents and students looking for an exciting pre-university programme in an international context. AIC is offering suitable students scholarships worth up to $43,000 each,” says Mr Haynes.

“We’d be delighted if at least one third of the scholarships were taken up by kiwi students, which will ensure the school retains a really strong local flavour.”

Mr Haynes says the scholarships provide a wonderful opportunity for parents who want a world class education and an internationally recognised qualification for their child, without having to pay full fees.

“All they will need to pay for is their child’s travel, uniform, stationery costs and accommodation in our modern supervised boarding facility if they are from outside of Auckland.”

AIC is advertising the scholarships as far afield as Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, China, Korea and Russia, as well as around New Zealand, in a bid to attract a varied and truly international group of students to the college.

“In an era of a global economy, it is important for New Zealanders to have a college that provides access to the Asian Pacific region, and for young people to get to know their neighbours by learning and living alongside each other,” says Mr Haynes.

The scholarships are valid for three years but are dependent on satisfactory progress through the programme. They do not cover accommodation or living costs. For a summary, please visit the website: www.aic.ac.nz/scholarships.

Parents and prospective students are invited to visit AIC’s Open Day on Saturday 5 April 2003 between 11 am and 1 pm to find out more about the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, meet AIC staff, inspect the School’s purpose-built facilities, and apply on-site for one of the scholarships.

Scholarship applications close on 7 April 2003.
