Wellington Student Teachers Deliver Fee Message to Local
MP
The Wellington Teacher Trainees’ Association (WTTA) will today present Wellington Central MP and Associate Education Minister Marian Hobbs with a signed placard from the students of the Wellington College of Education demanding low fees for students at Colleges of Education.
“Fee maxima must be set at a low level as student teachers cannot afford any fee increases,” said WTTA President Greg Henderson said. “New Zealand cannot afford to lose more teachers from classrooms either.”
“If the Government is serious about a knowledge society then it should recognise the important contribution that teachers make,” said Henderson. “Lumping student teachers with massive debts will make trained teachers move overseas and has the potential to create a dire teacher shortage in all areas”.
“The Government must invest more money into education to allow providers to lower fees and provide a quality education,” said Henderson
“A quality education for student teachers provides a crucial building block for New Zealand’s Knowledge Society,” said Henderson.
