UNITEC Student Union and UNITEC Council pleased that High Court action resolved

UNITEC Student Union (USU) and UNITEC Council are pleased that there has been a settlement of the High Court action brought by USU against the Council over the procedures for the conduct of the referendum regarding the status of membership of USU.

The outcome means that the referendum on compulsory membership can now go ahead, with some adjustments made to the form of the voting paper and related procedures. The voting papers will be posted out on Wednesday 13 August 2003. The referendum will end on Friday 12 September 2003.

‘I am delighted that we have been able to reach a resolution over the procedures for the conduct of the referendum so it can go ahead next week, giving effect to the students’ request for a vote which was made in February this year’ – Richelle Kahui-McConnell, President of USU says.

UNITEC Council CEO, Dr John Webster, also expressed his satisfaction that the procedural issues have been resolved. ‘We don’t have a stake in the outcome of the referendum. We are pleased that all UNITEC students will have an opportunity to express their view on whether membership of USU should become compulsory.’
