Arrow Constructs Novel University Facility

Arrow Christchurch is project managing a major new environment simulation facility at Lincoln University.

Called the New Zealand Biotron, the facility will support a range of biological, ecological and physiological research programmes conducted by the National Centre for Advanced Bio-Protection Technologies (Bio-Protection).

Arrow Christchurch manager Tom Clisby said the project added to the company’s growing reputation as a leader in education sector construction.

“Some of our other recent clients in this field include Cashmere High School and the Waitahu Learning Centre in Christchurch and Nayland College in Nelson,” he said.

“We have also done previous work for Lincoln University and welcome the continuation of this relationship.”

The Centre’s research is designed to meet the biosecurity and pest management needs of New Zealand’s plant-based primary industries while protecting native eco-systems.

The Biotron will be one of only three contained plant growth facilities in the world that allow simultaneous analysis of both above and below ground interactions between plants, micro-organisms, insects and physical factors like soil and climate.

One of the first research projects to be conducted in the Biotron will be a programme to test whether insects can be used to courier biocontrol agents to weeds such as gorse and broom. This project is expected to be completed between January and March 2004.
