Unitec Bachelor Of Design Students Shine At Metro/Canon Young Photographers Awards

Two Bachelor of Design students at Auckland's UNITEC have taken top honours at the inaugural Metro / Canon Young Photographers' Awards, each walking away with over $2,500 worth of Canon product and publication of their winning entries in Metro's October issue.

Amanda Docil won the portraiture / documentary section while the concept photography section was awarded to Ross McGuire. The Awards were open to students enrolled in photography courses at New Zealand tertiary institutions - the aim being to encourage documentary and concept photography.

The judges, including Canon's Gary Dixon, Metro's art director Jenny Nicholls and photographer Andrew Coffey, were delighted with the number of entries received and the exceptionally high standard of these.

"We were very impressed with the work submitted by New Zealand's up and coming photographers," said Canon Account Manager, Gary Dixon. "While we were unanimous in our decision to award Amanda and Ross top honours in the two categories, it was not an easy decision and this bodes well for the future of photo-journalism in New Zealand."

The two winners each received a Canon Powershot S45 Digital Camera, a CS5000F colour flatbed CCD scanner and a S830D Bubblejet printer. In addition, their entries will be published in the October issue of Metro magazine with the opportunity for further commissions from Metro in upcoming issues.
