Taking a shot at skill shortages
The Industry Training Federation (ITF) has taken a foray into popular culture to raise young people's awareness of workplace learning. Cars in the Wellington CBD are being "hit" this week with pamphlets entitled 'skill bill' and 'skill jill'.
Executive Director of the ITF, Darel Hall sees workplace learning as an opportunity for people to further their education while taking advantage of the current jobs boom. The trick is getting this message out: "we really need to start getting the attention of young people by using messages that they relate to".
Mr Hall admits that there may be some connections between what's happening at the movies and the theme for this campaign. "Young people are culture savvy; tapping into this is a good way to get our message across".
Mr Hall believes that when provided with the right information, young people will see the benefits of learning in the work place: "the beauty of Industry Training is that you earn while you learn and there's no student loan".
