New Diploma in Maori Business Launched

New Diploma in Maori Business Launched

A new diploma offered nationwide will meet the growing need for business skills and knowledge to support Maori organisations and ventures.

The Maori asset base is now worth in excess of $10 billion and is estimated to collectively be the third largest business entity in New Zealand.

The Diploma in Maori Business, available nationally by distance learning, is designed to address changing education needs for people working with iwi and Maori business ventures, or for people with an interest in the field.

Delivered by The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, the Diploma offers Victoria University's existing contact study programme in distance learning mode. It is made up of six courses, including core courses in business management, management of Maori resources, Maori authorities and Maori small business.

'Maori business and organisations are a growing force in the New Zealand economy. There is a rising demand for business education options that are in tune with Maori needs and aspirations,' says Programme Leader Dan Love from The Open Polytechnic. 'The Diploma is also relevant for people in non-Maori organisations who work with Maori.'

The Diploma opens up study options for people throughout the country and, in particular, those seeking an alternative to campus-based study. It is available for study from Semester 1, which commences 23 February 2004. Enrolments close 9 February.
