School computer audit report - a summary

The overall results for the schools involved in the audit are as follows:

Total number of schools audited 25 26% of the computers audited contained evidence of inappropriate use. 74% of the computers audited contained no evidence of inappropriate use.

The total number of pictures audited 21,988,179

The % of inappropriate images against total reviewed 0.019%

Inappropriate images were found in all levels and types of school, state, integrated, private, co-educational and single sex. The report involved a representative sample of computers in about 1% of schools. The sample is sufficient to give an indication of the extent of the problem across the whole system but too small to identify any trends in school type or other characteristics.

There were more inappropriate images in schools with broadband access than dial up.

Inappropriate images are categorized by the auditor within five categories. Of the total inappropriate images:

39% were “Calendar style” pictures and “Jokes” 23% were “Naked Images” 36% were images that were sexually explicit including restricted images under the Films, Videos and Publications Classification Act 1993. 2% were objectionable Images, images that are believed to be objectionable under the Films, Videos and Publications Classification Act.

Other internet activity potentially both work and non-work related was noted without any estimate of the amount of activity. These activities included:

On-line shopping Travel Hobbies/Interests (i.e. car parts/fixing) Gambling Medical Children interests (cartoons, etc)
