All views being sought on ACE funding framework

Concerns being expressed about the impacts of a proposed new adult and community education funding framework on school night classes are premature, according to the Tertiary Education Commission’s (TEC) Acting General Manager, Dr Colin Webb.

“Schools tell us they are well linked with their communities, and understand what the need is. In that case, schools should be well placed to seek ongoing funding within the new framework,” he said.

The TEC is currently running a public consultation on a proposed funding framework for Adult and Community Education (ACE) in which concepts developed with the ACE sector have been put forward for discussion.

“The process we’re running is a good one. People have until May 6 to get their points of view to us. People can go to our website www.tec.govt.nz for more information.

“No decisions have been made yet. We’re really keen to hear what all interested groups have to say about what we’re trying to achieve in terms of ensuring that ACE provision is of high quality and meets community needs. That’s what this consultation is all about!

“We see this as a great opportunity for the ACE sector to achieve its full potential, and we want to keep working with providers and community groups until we do get it right.

“Government is committed to adult and community education, and knows it is a vital part of communities around New Zealand. All the government wants is to ensure that the education being provided is based on a good understanding of all the community needs,” Dr Webb said.
