Student Job Search supports changes to international student policy

Student Job Search has strongly welcomed changes to the immigration policy which will enable international students to obtain additional work to support their studies and contribute to the New Zealand economy.

General Manager of Student Job Search, Dean Carroll said that the changes would allow international students to contribute further to the local economy and would also encourage more international students to enrol in New Zealand universities and polytechnics”.

International students make an outstanding contribution both to the New Zealand tertiary education experience and the economy, said Mr Carroll.

“International students are often amongst the highest performing students and are well represented in our flagship ‘FutureGrad’ programme. They are a near perfect fit in filling many key skills gaps” said Mr Carroll.

“International students are also looking to get more out of their New Zealand tertiary education experience than simply qualifications. They want to experience the kiwi lifestyle and this is often achieved through working.”

Mr Carroll confirmed that far from international students displacing domestic students, in the current labour market they are a key component in meeting the employment needs of small to medium sized enterprises.

Student Job Search is a non profit organisation, which is funded by both student associations and government via Studylink, and provides a free service to both students and employers alike. “SJS is certainly part of the culture of international student life, many students gain their first work experience via Student Job Search, “said Mr Carroll
