Launch of Results of Education Research Project

Media Release:

Launch of Results of Major Education Research Project
Publication Day Today - 10 June 2005

We have now published the outcome of a major piece of research we commissioned on the key issues involved in privatisation of education in New Zealand and internationally.

The research project is entitled “Privatisation of Education” and subtitled -

FACTFILES: PRIVATE AND PUBLIC EDUCATION
An international study of educational reform with a New Zealand focus

The research is in the form of 42 “factfiles” and is now accessible on our website at www.qpec.org.nz or by using the links on the attached index.

These factfiles will be a major new resource for parents, students, educators, journalists and politicians and all those interested in education policy in the early childhood, school and tertiary sectors.

Each fact-file takes an even-handed look at the key issues involved in different aspects of educational reform around the world both from the point of view of advocates of public education as well as those supporting privatisation.

We have done this essentially out of respect for New Zealand parents, students, educators and commentators. Using this resource they will be able to become much better informed about the issues for education in New Zealand beyond the various political party slogans to be expected this year.

Taken together the factfiles reveal the deception behind so-called “school choice” policies, “voucher” schemes and private provision of education as well as pointing to the huge damage from continuing and growing privatisation under the current government.

The research reveals that with privatisation policies –

There is no improvement in student achievement
Popular schools choose the students they want rather than the other way round
There is less choice and lower quality for young people from lower income communities at all levels of education
The quality of education depends on a person’s ability to pay

As the year progresses, the factfiles will develop a stronger local flavour as they are updated with the education policies of the various political parties.
