Nominate your favourite teacher this Teachers' Day

Nominate your favourite teacher this World Teachers' Day

Think global but act local on World Teachers' Day (subs: 5 October) and nominate your favourite teacher for the ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA).

Pat Lynch, convener of selection panel and member of NEiTA advisory council, says World Teachers' Day is the perfect day to download a NEiTA nomination form, fill it out and get it in by 28 October.

A United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation initiative, World Teachers' Day acknowledges the vital contribution that teachers make to the education and development of our children.

"These objectives fit well with ASG's National Excellence in Teaching Awards. The NEITA awards aim to recognise and honour excellent teachers in local communities, to raise the status of teaching and to encourage excellence in the teaching profession. Since they began in 1996, over 2,000 teachers have been nominated.

"Teachers are our country's unsung heroes. They are often the school's rugby and netball coach, sausage sizzle cook, or raffle ticket seller. But most importantly they are the most influential person in the development and future of children.

"So, let's give them a big pat on the back for the great the work they do and what better way than nominating them for a National Excellence in Teaching Award," says Pat Lynch.

All teachers nominated receive a certificate and in 2006, 20 regional awards and six national awards will be presented. Three of the six national award recipients will receive ASG Professional Development Grants, one of $5,000 and two of $2,500.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the NEiTA website, www.neita.org.nz. They are also available from schools and early childhood centres nationwide, or can be obtained by telephoning the ASG Secretariat on (09) 366-7670. Nominations are open until 28 October 2005.
