Students Win Horticulture Scholarships

MEDIA RELEASE November 1, 2005

Students Win Horticulture Scholarships

ZESPRI International Ltd has awarded $3000 horticulture Scholarships to seven high school students from throughout the North Island.

The scholarships are awarded annually to students who intend to study full time for a degree or diploma in a horticulture-related subject at University or polytechnic next year. Each scholarship is for one year.

A total of 18 students from 15 different schools applied for the scholarships, and the standard of applicants was very high, ZESPRI Chief Executive Tim Goodacre said. ZESPRI had launched the scholarships last year as part of the industry’s centennial celebrations.

Fostering and supporting the education of young people who wanted to pursue a career in horticulture was one way ZESPRI could help create a sustainable future for the kiwifruit industry, he said.

“The industry needs more hard-working, dedicated and passionate young people to continue to grow, improve and innovate, and lead the industry forward in the future,” he said.

This year’s winners are:

- Andrew Rosso of Gisborne, who is studying for a Bachelor of Applied Science at Massey University.

- Jordan Hosking of Tauranga, who is studying for a Bachelor of Applied Science at Canterbury University.
