Taranaki students desperate for work

Local tertiary students in Taranaki are keen for work and a ready to tackle almost anything in the lead up to Christmas, says Barry Dowell, Regional Manager of Student Job Search.

“The decline in job offers this has been quite worrying and we don’t want students living on noodles for Christmas” said Mr Dowell.

On Monday, local MP Hon Harry Duynhoven paid a visit to the local Student Job Search office. He commented “Clearly for students this is the major opportunity over the summer break to earn money to help sustain their study in the coming year. Therefore I’d urge all those who do have summer work to act speedily and be in touch with Student Job Search so that their willing worker can be sent to them.”

Mr Duynhoven suggested “more people needed to know about the Student Job Search service as there is plenty of work to be done, and students willing to do it.”

This has been a very slow summer for Student Job Search, with numbers down on new jobs especially in the household market. Employment Officer Katy McEwen said “I am a bit disappointed at the lack of interest expressed by households. There is a core group of students wanting one-off work and at the moment, there is not enough work to go round.

Students are willing to do just about anything to earn some money – be it gardening, cleaning, housewashing haymaking or dog walking. Now is the time to be tidying the house and section before Christmas, and with the weather improving, students are eager to be working in the sun!”

“With over 1000 students looking for work during the summer period in our province clearly there are plenty of opportunities to have those neglected maintainance tasks done!” “With it being such a busy time on farms there’s an opportunity for farmers to pick up an extra temporary worker” said Mr Duynhoven.
