Respect school’s grief
PPTA is urging media organisations to give Putaruru College staff and students space to come to terms with the death of another student who attended the school.
PPTA president Debbie Te Whaiti said further media spotlight would do little good for the school’s staff and students.
“This is a difficult time for the school community. Everyone will be affected by this death in some way.
“We echo the view of the Ministry and ask that media do not try to contact the principal or Putaruru staff and students.”
Te Whaiti said PPTA was reassured that Ministry of Education special education staff were working closely with the college and families of students at the school and would be providing professional support to teachers.
She also said PPTA was contributing a $1000 to a fund to provide relief for staff who need to access individual counselling and support.
“Teachers need to be able to support the students but they also need time and support for themselves.”
