NZEI Welcomes New Primary School Term Dates
NZEI Te Riu Roa is pleased that it’s proposals to modify primary school term dates for next year have been accepted.
The new dates will bring the primary school terms breaks at the end of Terms 1, 2 and 3 into alignment with the secondary school breaks.
“The misalignment of primary and secondary term breaks, particularly at the end of Term 1, is causing problems for primary schools,” says Irene Cooper, National President of NZEI Te Riu Roa.
Many primary children are missing school because their holiday at the end of Term 1 is shorter than the secondary school break. This is because families with primary and secondary age children are going on holiday and not returning until the secondary schools resume.
“NZEI is pleased that the concerns expressed by primary principals and teachers about their term breaks have been listened to and their suggested changes have been taken on board by the Ministry of Education and the Education Minister,” says Irene Cooper.
The Ministry has indicated that the changes to primary term dates apply only for next year and that there will be further consultation about term dates for 2008 and beyond.
The 2007 term dates for Primary and Intermediate
Schools will be as follows:
Term 1
Wednesday 7
February to Thursday 5 April (84 half days).
Term
2
Monday 23 April to Friday 29 June (96 half
days).
Term 3
Monday 16 July to Friday 21 September
(100 half days).
