New professors appointed at AUT

AUT University Vice Chancellor Derek McCormack is pleased to announce the following staff have been promoted to professor.

Professor of History, Paul Moon. Paul is a leading researcher in the field of New Zealand history. He has published numerous books and articles, many related to events and personalities surrounding the Treaty of Waitangi and early New Zealand governance, and is regularly called as consultant for government and iwi. Professor Moon is part of Te Ara Poutama (Faculty of Maori Development) and started at AUT in 1993.

Professor of Constitutional Law, Noel Cox. Noel is a barrister and solicitor in the High Court of New Zealand and internationally noted as constitutional lawyer as well as for his academic work on the constitutional powers of the Crown. He has been an invited expert at the International Court of the Hague, is widely published and is visiting fellow at Australia National University. Professor Cox has been at AUT’s Business School since 1998.

Professor of Communications, Barry King. School of Communications Head Professor King’s research interests are wide and he has published books and articles on film and television studies, American culture, visual semiotics, and the sociology of performance, stardom and celebrity. He is editor of a number of journals and a consultant on television violence. Professor King’s work has been acknowledged in various ways, including invitations to set up key national and international research and policy groups. He is a member of the Royal Society of NZ and has worked in universities in London, Leeds, Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. Professor King started at AUT in 1998.

A new appointment to AUT is Professor Marilyn Waring who has joined the Institute of Public Policy from Massey University. Professor Waring is known internationally for her work on female human rights, holds a PhD in political economy and has held fellowships at Harvard and Rutgers universities. She is a member of the Board of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and has worked as a consultant for organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the Yukon Territorial Government, the Ford Foundation and the Ontario Provincial Government. She is also known for her role as a politician, becoming New Zealand’s youngest Member of Parliament in 1975, at the age of 22.
