Famine scholars hit Wellington
Famine scholars hit Wellington
It's a week of ministers, meetings and maraes for this year's top World Vision 40 Hour Famine scholars, who started the week sleeping at the Orongomai Marae last night.
The 20 secondary school students from around the country are in Wellington on a Sanitarium scholarship week (July 2-7) to learn what New Zealanders can do about poverty and to develop their own leadership skills, kicking off with a full day of visits to Dev Zone, CID and NZ Aid today.
Chris Jupp of Wellington College, Lucy Kelly of Tawa College and Sophie Curtis of Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, all in year 13, are among the 20 students.
For the country's top 40 Hour Famine school organisers, this week is a reward for their efforts that have seen more than $2.5 million raised this year for World Vision's projects worldwide.
The culmination of the week's events is the Awards Dinner on Thursday night, July 6, when three students will be awarded Sanitarium-funded travelling scholarships, which will see them travelling to Vanuatu in their September school holidays to see development in action in 40 Hour Famine-funded programmes.
Their Wellington itinerary is packed with meeting people, visiting organisations and of course some sightseeing; the students will meet the Rt. Hon. Bill English, Hon. Peter Dunne, and Dr Cindy Kiro the Commissioner for Children, among others, as well as tour through Government House and visit Te Papa.
