Open Polytechnic Research wins international award

Dr Gillian Oliver from The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand has taken away the top award in the Information Science category of the international 2006 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards.

Dr Oliver received the award for her research ‘Information in organisations: a comparative study of information cultures.’

Receiving her doctorate from Monash University in Australia this year, Dr Oliver conducted fieldwork in Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, and Paris, spending time with distance education universities in each of the first three countries in order to gain an overall view of their information management systems, and attending a meeting of the committee drafting the international standard on records management in Paris.

“My research compared and contrasted attitudes of staff from different national contexts to the management of information,” says Dr Oliver. “Findings from this study are significant when considering globalisation issues which are relevant to information management, such as the increasing international mobility of information management professionals.”

Dr Oliver’s entry was selected for the award by the editors of the Journal of Documentation. Her prize includes $3,000 cash, and an offer of publication in an Emerald journal

Emerald is one of the leading English language publishers of academic and professional literature in the fields of management, library services and engineering. It established the doctoral research awards in 2005 to help promote and reward high-quality research, and received over 100 entries from around the world in twelve different categories for consideration in this year’s awards.

Currently the Degree Convenor for the Bachelor of Applied Science and the Bachelor of Arts at The Open Polytechnic, Dr Oliver is now set to join Archives New Zealand to contribute to the development of a digital archival repository.
