Professor Peter Guthrie is the first Professor in Engineering, Centre for Sustainable Development, Department of Engineering at Cambridge University, England. Peter was recently one of the highly successful keynote speakers at the Talking and Walking Sustainability Conference, and spoke on Breakfast TV last week.

Peter is a civil engineer with geotechnical specialisation by background, and has worked on roads in countries such as Nigeria, Lesotho, Sudan, Philippines Ethiopia, and Botswana, and on major infrastructure projects such as Channel Tunnel Rail Link, CrossRail, West Coast Mainline Route Modernisation and Birmingham, and Manchester Airports, and major building projects such as Eden Project Phase 4, and large scale schemes for the Prison Service and the Ministry of Defence. He has advised on policy matters related to waste and environment in Russia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Romania and Portugal.

Sustainable Development – Time to Act : A Civil Engineer’s Response

The public lectures will be on the theme of urgency for action now towards sustainable development. Peter will set the scene for climate change evidence but go on to say that even without the dangers that are inherent in climate change predictions there is an overwhelming need to change the way that advanced economies work in terms of use of resources, equity with less well off nations and responsibility to future generations
