Schools prepare for nominations to roll in
Schools prepare for nominations to roll in
Media release
Nominations open tomorrow (March 1) as schools prepare for New Zealand’s biggest democratic event, the School Trustee Elections.
School Trustee Election Project Manager Janet Kelly says more than 13,000 people are needed to fill positions on boards of trustees at 2,500 schools throughout the country.
The nomination period runs until 15 March and the National Election Day is 29 March.
Janet Kelly says schools are well-prepared for the elections and she encouraged people to get their nominations in early.
“We’re looking for informed people with a range of skills and experiences to step forward and make a difference for our schools.
“Many of the current trustees are looking to stand again, which means there is a strong starting point for new trustees to come on board.”
Janet Kelly encouraged those who were undecided to take time to consider the valuable role boards of trustees play in children’s education.
“It’s great to hear from people who are considering standing for the first time. It’s exciting to hear when people are passionate about their local school and want to see it succeed. We look forward to many of them standing during nominations.”
For those considering trusteeship for the first time, Janet Kelly suggests they contact their local school for more information. She also encouraged people to nominate others they think would make good trustees.
“We need people to have their nominations in by 15 March so parents can vote for the candidates on election day – 29 March,” she says.
