Inclusive education best for every child
IHC New Zealand is pleased to support the establishment of the Inclusive Education Action Group, which will be launched at parliament today by the Minister for Disability Issues, Hon Ruth Dyson.
"For many years IHC has lobbied for children with intellectual disabilities to be welcomed at their local school, and to be given the same opportunities as all other children," says General Manager IHC Programmes, Janine Stewart.
"Research shows that inclusive schools are best for all children disabled and non disabled. IHC knows of some schools which are great. They support all children and they provide resources and support to teachers who work with children with disabilities.
"Unfortunately we know of more schools that are not supportive and do not seem to realise that inclusive education is required in New Zealand law, international law and education policy."
"IHC and the Inclusive Education Action Group are encouraging school boards of trustees, teacher unions and parents groups to support fully inclusive education for children with disabilities," says Janine Stewart.
"IHC is looking forward to working with the Inclusive Education Action Group and the education sector to bring about a new era of inclusive education in New Zealand."
