MIT works at attracting
more men into nursing profession
Nursing department hosts
male experience day for schools
Manukau Institute of Technology’s Department of Nursing and Health Studies hosted a Bachelor of Nursing, Male Experience Day for year 12 and 13 school leavers on Tuesday, 04 September in a move to attract more men to the profession.
“We are working closely with our Student Liaison team, particularly Vicki Baker, as both the Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) and MIT believe men would benefit from nursing as a career choice,” says Dr Willem Fourie, deputy head of department, Department of Nursing and Health Studies.
“There is a significant regional and national shortage within the profession of nurses, particularly males, which we need to proactively address. Men bring a lot to the nursing environment as they bring a wealth of personal experiences to the profession and ultimately contribute to the workforce in a positive manner by being good role models for others.”
According to Dr Fourie, nursing offers a stable career path and the ability to practice in a variety of areas. “Many men see themselves on a career path that could ultimately lead to postgraduate qualifications and leadership positions in both the private and public sectors. Nursing is an attractive career choice with a diversity of experiences locally and internationally. For men, nursing offers flexible working hours in an environment that has few downsizings or layoffs and plenty of opportunities for professional development.”
