Summer School of the Arts

A creative line-up of workshops is planned for the Whanganui Summer School of the Arts, which runs from 6-12 January 2008. The Summer School of the Arts is the most innovative and exciting summer school currently operating in New Zealand, and is a total-experience event with social activities, tutor presentations and exhibitions also on offer during the week.

In addition to the great range of visual arts courses, on offer this time is also a music course with renowned harmonica player, Brendan Power who lists playing with Van Morrison and Sting, performing in the River dance show, and composing music for movies starring Jackie Chan and Madonna, among his achievements. Power believes anyone with a sense of rhythm can achieve something in a week with his harmonica course - you don't need previous experience.

Also new to Summer School is an Interior and Garden Design course. This is run by tutor Gill Warren, who promises to show you how to add real value to both new and existing properties, making them fare better in the market place, and all within modest budgets.

Summer School Coordinator Katrina Langdon said adding new courses is all part of keeping the summer school experience fresh and exciting for those participants who come every year. Other great courses on offer include: Painting (courses in watercolour, acrylic, soft pastel), Printmaking (mezzotint and woodcut), Sculpture (stone carving and Darjit plaster), Glass (blowing, kiln forming and lead-lighting), Jewellery, Mosaics, and textiles - something for everyone.

The week promises to be one of creative interaction, fun and real community for all participants. Wanganui has a long and passionate history with the arts and this is reflected in the Summer School through passionate people, renowned and inspirational tutors/artists and an exciting, social and encouraging environment.

All workshops will be held at Wanganui Girls College with the exception of the glass courses which will be Whanganui UCOL's Main Campus. Katrina says that the facilities at the Girls College are really fantastic, and well suited to Summer School activities.
