Rural Kids to go Undercover

Rural kids waiting for the school bus will get some welcome shelter over the next two years as the result of an initiative that will see hundreds of new bus shelters provided on rural bus routes.

The initiative from Totalspan, already well known in the rural community as New Zealand's leading manufacturer of steel buildings, has been warmly welcomed by the New Zealand School Trustees Association.

The Totalspan “Undercover Kids” programme will see a minimum of 112 bus shelters being provided during 2008, an additional 150 in 2009 with a commitment to increase the number in years to come. Boards will apply to have shelters built for their students.

Lorraine Kerr, President of the New Zealand School Trustees Association says it is a brilliant move.

“Keeping our school children both dry and safe to and from school is important to parents, school communities and to the schools themselves,” she says.

“NZSTA applauds Totalspan for its generous contribution to rural communities through the Undercover Kids programme, and particularly given that the commitment is intended to be an ongoing one.”

Lorraine Kerr says the NZSTA with its 2, 200 member boards, is proud to be leading supporter of the project from which so many of children will directly benefit, year in and year out.

The proposed new bus shelter will be on display at the NZSTA conference in Christchurch July 2008. Lorraine Kerr says she expects applications will flood in from boards wanting to have protection for their students.
