Palmerston North furniture designer to show on Waiheke Island

UCOL furniture designer Andy Halewood has been selected to take part in an elite furniture design exhibition on Waiheke Island.

Andy is one of only 10 designers selected to take part in Design Make: Sideboard 2008, an annual event which showcases excellence in furniture design: This year it will feature sideboards made and designed by furniture makers around New Zealand.

The exhibition is organised by the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and builds on the success of two previous exhibitions featuring seating designs, and tables.
Andy will travel to Waiheke Island for the exhibition which opens on Friday 8 August and runs until Monday 1 September. The winner of a $2000 award will be announced on opening night. Judging will be by well known Auckland designer Tom Skyring.

Andy’s selection was based on drawings of his sideboard, submitted to the organisers. He is still working on completing the work, which is made of pine and macrocarpa “with some aluminium.”

It is the first time a Manawatu-based furniture maker has made the final cut for the prestigious Waiheke exhibition. Andy, however, has had other successes in national competitions. He took first prize for furniture at the National Wood Skills Festival at Kawerau in 2005.

He is also been the driving force behind the success of UCOL students in the Kawerau event: Last year second year student Richard Morris also won the furniture section.

Andy is a senior lecturer for UCOL’s Diploma in Furniture Design and Making, a qualification that is unique to UCOL.
