New Tertiary Campus In Counties Manukau

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) today acknowledged the Government’s announcement on funding a tertiary campus in Counties Manukau for Auckland University of Technology.

Dr Peter Brothers, chief executive of MIT said, “MIT has been providing polytechnic education for the people of Counties Manukau for 40 years. Each year we deliver education programmes at MIT for around 23,000 people. We consider that the government’s decision to fund Auckland University of Technology’s move into the region will have little impact on our own operations.”

“Its business as usual for us. And that means delivering great quality tertiary education for our students and communities, continuing to invest in developing new and innovative programmes to meet our students growing needs and investing in the infrastructure to support that delivery.”

MIT offers certificate, diploma and degree level education in a wide range of disciplines, as well as partnering with University of Auckland, University of Waikato and Southern Cross University to deliver degree programmes in business, visual arts, education, nursing, social work and engineering.

Dr Brothers added that MIT had a very close working relationship with Manukau City Council, and both parties were developing a shared vision for increased participation in polytechnic education for the people of Counties Manukau.

“There is room for step changes in the number of people in this region accessing tertiary education, and we aim to be at the forefront of the effort to increase participation. We will leverage our existing work with the community groups and organisations that we have very strong relationships with to deliver that strategy.”
