Exhibition displays diverse inspirations

A sculpture created from toy cars and helium balloons marked with Spanish proverbs and created by a student from the Galapagos Islands is among works on show in Wanganui from this Wednesday.

The Blank Slate exhibition will fill the UCOL Quay School of the Arts Edith Gallery with installation works by second year Bachelor of Fine Arts students.

Whanganui UCOL Sculpture and Digital Media Lecturer Brit Bunkley says the public are invited to visit the gallery to see the show.

“The works are all installation pieces created especially for the show. They are made from a wide range of materials, and reflect the multicultural mix in the class.

“I think we have only one Aotearoa-born student in this class. We have students originally from the Britain, South Africa, the Czech Republic, and the Galapagos Islands
and Quito in Ecuador.”

Brit says the students’, works cover a wide range of themes. “The students sub-directed the exhibition, each working on an individual contract with me to complete their pieces.”

Other works will include glue used to mimic human skin, work made from replica Scrabble pieces, and reflections on the male imagery of Greek sculpture.

“This will be a wildly imaginative and unique collection of works, from a diverse group of people from a range of cultures”, Brit says.

The works will be on display at the Edith Gallery at the Whanganui UCOL Campus, Rutland Street, until 30 August.
