Little ‘houses’ sprouting at UCOL Wairarapa

Three little ‘houses’ have sprouted on the UCOL Wairarapa campus in Masterton and are attracting public interest.

The houses are being used as a building exercise by Certificate in Carpentry, and secondary school STAR programme students. After the buildings are completed they will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at a public Carpentry Open Evening at the UCOL Wairarapa campus on 19 November.

Carpentry Lecturer Brett Tickner says there has already been a lot of interest in the little houses, with people walking in off the street and asking to buy them.

He says they would be perfect as a doll’s house, garden shed, or even a farm or bus shelter, and is expecting they could attract strong bidding.

“To give the students experience, the building methods, tools and scaffolds are the same as those used in the real world of construction. They get a hands-on taste of working with the demands of a real construction environment and working outside in the weather,” said Brett.

He says the buildings are timber framed and clad, and the design means students have the opportunity to build a flooring platform, floor section and the shingled roofs. The window frames were made by students on a Joinery Block course from Palmerston North UCOL.

Brett says people interested in having a closer look are welcome to inspect the little houses on the UCOL Wairarapa campus grounds. They will also be appearing on display in different locations around town.
