SIT to be Southernmost Learning Organisation on iTunes U

The Southern Institute of Technology in broadening its SIT2LRN platform has become the world’s southern most organisation to have a presence on iTunes U. The new site will be part of the iTunes Store and launched at the SIT campus, this Friday October 24, at 4pm.

“This is an exciting new venture for SIT that will allow our courses to be available to anyone with access to the iTunes Store. We are the first non-university in Australasia to be on this site,” said Southern Institute of Technology CEO Penny Simmonds.

iTunes U is part of the Apple iTunes Store and is filled with educational audio and video content that you can take anywhere on your iPod or iPhone. Everything in it comes straight from museums and universities and other cultural and learning institutions around the world. It is all free and available to anyone not just students.

“ It’s the campus that never sleeps and has enabled SIT to offer it’s courses to a far wider audience as well as showcase some of the beautiful aspects of New Zealand in the process,” said Simmonds

SIT have been developing the site for several months and have a large amount of video content mainly due to their own in house ability to record through their Television Production Unit and programmes in the Sir Anthony Hopkins School of Dramatic Arts, the Peter Arnett School of Journalism and the Bachelors of Digital Media and Contemporary Music.

The new public delivery system will feature a range of free content including interviews with energy industry experts, English language lessons, the celebrity chef’s dinner, the Hokonui Fashion Awards and film, music and sound clips.

“ It will grant all our students as well as lifelong learners the flexibility in time and the materials they need to achieve the results they desire,” she said.

“We call it edutainment and are really pleased with the dynamic end result. It is a stimulating and entertaining way to learn that particularly appeals to the young and the young at heart, It also allows the student to be mobile and free to learn in whatever environment they choose” says Simmonds.
